One of the things I enjoy most about the writing—or more accurately, prewriting—stage of a novel is all the research that goes into world-building and mood-setting.
My current work-in-progress is a post-apocalyptic adventure romance. (Is that a genre? I’ll worry about it after I get to The End on draft 1.) So I’ve been hunting for some new songs to download that seem to capture some wisp of the bits and pieces of the story rattling around in my head.
A search in the iTunes store for “end of the world” yielded up a new-to-me artist named Ron Dickinson (also of the band Catherine Wheel) and the song of the same name.
Here’s the chorus…
If the end of the world was near
Where would you choose to be?
If there were five more minutes
Would you panic and hide?
Or run for your life?
Or stand here and spend them with me?
If we had five more minutes
Would I, could I, make you happy?
Deep thoughts. Where would you want to be if you only had five minutes left?
What song would be playing in the background? I’d love your suggestions to build my post-apocalyptic soundtrack!
Here’s Ron Dickinson belting it out.
Edited to add: hang in there a minute and the picture rights itself!
